October Excursion to
Milkweed Farms

Kim Bailey is the owner of Milkweed Meadows Farm in Fruitland, N.C. On farmland that’s been in her husband’s family for generations, she grows milkweed, pawpaw, passionvine, and other pollinator-friendly plants. She sells at plant sales and supplies seeds for Sow True Seed. As a volunteer, she coordinates Bee City USA  – Hendersonville, a program to create healthy habitats for all pollinators. On vacation, she travels to Mexico with her friends to see the monarchs overwintering in their mountain sanctuaries.  A few Town and Country Garden Club members visited this amazing farm this past spring to watch several monarch butterflies released on their inaugural flights and vowed to return in the fall to hopefully see the monarchs as they make their southward journey and taste ripe pawpaws  Eight members of the club went back to Milkweed Meadows Farm in October but missed out on tasting pawpaws (harvest was done the week before) but were able to see a few monarch chrysalis ready to burst a butterfly as well as enjoy a field trip to the garden and pawpaw field. Kim, as usual, was her most gracious and knowledgeable self, and allowed us to linger as she spoke to someone who wanted to learn how to mimic what Kim was doing while we were there. Another beautiful outdoor event during one of the most beautiful times of the year!
